The layer style could be used in a variety of different environments ranging from light and dark compositions to colored and textured backgrounds, without loosing the physical properties you expect from glass based objects. Additionally, when needed you could also easily tint (color) the glass itself, and it would adequately cast its color on the surface (layer) behind it.
